We start our tour with
a visit to the archaeological area of Dion. Dion is an area at the foot of Mt
Olympus. It is known all over the world because archaeologists discovered an
ancient Macedonian city and an admirable civilization. Dion was the sacred city
of Macedonians. It was closely associated with Zeus as its name implies (in
Greek the god is called Dias) .The excavations have exposed paved streets, public
buildings, shops and houses, as well as the orchestra, stage and lower seats of
Dion’s large theatre. Also we can visit the archaeological museum of Dion.
We continue to
Litochoro, a village built on the east side of Mt Olympus (the highest mountain
of Greece). According to Greek mythology, Mount Olympus was the house of the
Twelve Olympian Gods. Nowadays it is declared a National Park. You can walk the
most accessible and famous itinerary, also known as “European path E4” begins
from Litochoro and continues on the west to the peaks through the Enipeas
canyon.
